5 Cars UK Owners Secretly Regret Buying

3. Nissan Qashqai (Diesel, 2014–2018) — The Reliable One That Wasn’t

The Nissan Qashqai is Britain’s best-selling SUV of the past decade. For years, it was the benchmark — the car every rival tried to beat. Its reputation for vehicle reliability was so strong that buyers barely bothered to do additional research.

That reputation, it turns out, was built largely on older models.

The diesel Qashqai models from the 2014–2018 period developed a host of well-documented problems. The DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) clogs regularly on cars used primarily for short urban journeys — a very common usage pattern among UK drivers. Regeneration failures lead to expensive repairs, and some owners have faced bills exceeding £1,200 just to address DPF-related issues.

There are also reports of CVT automatic gearbox problems causing jerky, unreliable performance — and CVT replacement or rebuild costs are notoriously high. Repair costs in this area can reach £2,500 or more at an independent garage, and significantly higher at a main dealer.

Meanwhile, fuel economy in real-world driving conditions often disappoints. The official figures look attractive, but diesel owners doing mostly city and suburban driving frequently report consumption far above what Nissan advertised.

The Qashqai’s high volumes on the used car market mean that good examples do exist — but so do many poorly maintained, problem-riddled cars hiding behind a reasonable MOT history. Knowing how to tell the difference is critical.

The depreciation on diesel variants has been particularly steep in recent years, driven by changing public perception of diesel engines and the expanding network of clean air zones across UK cities.

Still, the Qashqai is far from the most expensive mistake on this list. The next car was sold as a prestige, long-term investment — and yet owners are discovering a very different reality.
