2. Ford Fiesta — The Nation’s Former Favourite, Officially Gone

The Ford Fiesta doesn’t just risk disappearing — it already has. Ford officially ended Fiesta production in June 2023, closing the Cologne factory and drawing a line under one of the most successful automotive stories in British history. For over four decades, it was the UK’s best-selling car. And then, almost overnight, it was gone.
Why did Ford walk away from such a beloved model? The maths became impossible. Small cars generate thin profit margins at the best of times, and the cost of developing a competitive electric version simply didn’t stack up commercially. Ford made the strategic decision to pivot aggressively toward electric vehicles, SUVs, and commercial vans — and the Fiesta didn’t fit that future.
The ripple effects for UK drivers have been significant. Car insurance costs for used Fiestas have fluctuated as demand for second-hand models initially spiked. Meanwhile, drivers who relied on the Fiesta’s exceptional fuel economy and low maintenance costs are finding it increasingly difficult to find a comparable replacement at the same price point. The gap the Fiesta left has not been adequately filled — and that’s a genuine problem for budget-conscious UK drivers.
If you’re holding onto a late-plate Fiesta, it may actually prove to be a smarter long-term decision than you think.
